I ordered Jocko Willink’s book Discipline Equals Freedom as soon I could.
Since his podcast appearance on Tim Ferriss’ show, Jocko is nearly a household name.
Discipline Equals Freedom reads more like a collection of short essays than a novel.
Anyone familiar with Jocko’s speaking cadence from his interviews with Joe Rogan, Ferriss, or on his own podcast will hear Jocko’s voice on every page.
If you don’t know Jocko’s voice, then I’ll tell you now: the book is terse and blunt. It is to the point.
Here are a few of my favorite quotes from Discipline:
“Self-discipline comes when you decide to make a mark on the world.”
“Take that first step and make it happen.”
“Discipline your body. Free your mind. Get up early, and go. Get after it and you will become the person you want to be.”
“You have to decide that you are going to be in control…”
“I am weak…but I don’t accept that.”
“Discipline starts with waking up early.”
“…being aggressive…means that you are going to get after it…”
“Choose to make. Your. Self.”
“You get one shot.”
“You know what you have to do. So: make yourself do it. You do that with Discipline.”
“most of us succumb to weakness…it is a slow incremental progress…we sleep in a little later. We miss a workout, then another. We start to eat what we shouldn’t eat and drink what we shouldn’t drink. And, without realizing it-one day, you wake up and you have become something that you never would have allowed.“
That last quote is particularly striking. It’s opposite is also true: focus on implementing habits that build momentum long enough, and one day you may wake up in a villa on the ocean, a penthouse overlooking the city, or a mansion in the mountain.
Your bank accounts will be bursting.
Your relationships meaningful
Your body exactly as you want it
And yourself totally free.
Discipline Equals Freedom is more than a book. It’s a way of life. In an age with no meaningful rite of passage and instant gratification, choosing discipline is necessary.
In today’s world, I find the building and strengthening of one’s own body and mind to be a great tangible teacher and test of discipline. Jocko includes some tough workouts, scaled from beginner to advanced, as an appendix. They constructed similarly to a well-thought out Crossfit WOD (the kind you’d find in a great Box like Aspen Crossfit.)
I highly recommend Jocko’s other book Extreme Ownership,co-written with fellow SEAL Leif Baibin, as well as JOCKO PODCAST.
Get to listening to Jocko, and get to developing your body with Statue Jacked. It will pack slabs of muscle on you, melt your bodyfat, and yes….it will force you to be disciplined.
